Magical Potion Making at Home

There’s something about potion making that children absolutely love. Give them a cauldron, a wand and a collection of mysteriously named ingredients and suddenly they’re completely absorbed in their own little world.

And the best bit? You don’t need to plan an entire themed day to make it feel special.

Set the scene

Potion making is definitely more fun when children are allowed to get stuck in, so choose somewhere you don’t mind getting a little messy.

A wipe-clean table, kitchen floor or outdoor space works brilliantly. Pop down an old tablecloth or tray, put their potion kit in the middle and let them discover everything inside.

For an extra bit of magic, dim the lights, add some fairy lights or put on a magical playlist in the background.

Let them take the lead

It can be tempting as adults to make sure everything is done exactly according to the instructions.

But some of the best potion making happens when children start experimenting.

What happens if they stir their wand the other way? What colour will their potion become? Can they invent a spell before adding their next ingredient?

Our potion kits give children a recipe to follow, but there’s plenty of opportunity for imagination along the way.

Expect bubbles, fizz and mess!

Keep the magic going

One of my favourite things about our kits is that many of the tools and ingredients are reusable.

Once the original ingredients have been enjoyed, the cauldrons, wands, pipettes and other pieces don't need to disappear into a cupboard.

Children can invent their own potions using things from around the house or garden – water, petals, leaves and other child-safe ingredients can become something completely different with a little imagination.

Because sometimes all you need for a magical afternoon is a cauldron and a very good imagination.
